Together We Can Build Better Websites

A properly designed website is a valuable tool for your non-profit organization. Yes, design and branding is important, but having users that are able to read and understand your message, regardless of disabilities, is critical. Your website should accurately relay your mission to your community while providing resources to those in need with clear & concise messaging. Fivepenny will work with you to make that happen.

WCAG Accessible Websites

According to the 2022 stats from the CDC, 28.7% of the U.S. suffers some type of disability. Developing an accessible website means including viewers that otherwise may be excluded from your messaging.

Building Websites to Serve Those Who Serve Others

Your nonprofit's website should reach everyone in your community—including visitors too often left out of the design process. That's why accessibility and WCAG compliance aren't afterthoughts for us; they're foundational.

We work as your consultant, not just your designer. We listen to your mission and goals, and we build a WordPress site that aligns with both your vision and your real constraints—whether that's budget, staff capacity, or timeline. The result is a site that truly serves your community while respecting the resources you have available.

Website Design Common Questions

Website Design With Fivepenny

  • Do you only build in WordPress?

WordPress is our specialty. It is convenient for our clients and integrates well with a variety of toolsets. On occasion we have developed using basic HTML/CSS when it was best for the project. We have also assisted clients with existing websites in other CMS platforms including Squarespace & Wix. However, as the founder of Fivepenny, WordPress is what I have specialized in for over 15 years.

  • Is it better to update my existing website or start over?

We can evaluate your existing website, the framework behind it and what your end-goal is. From that analysis, we can determine the best path forward to provide you the website you need that best fits into your budget.

  • My organization does not have a large budget, can I still get a nice website?

Absolutely. We can always build something to get your web presence online and feature the necessary elements, then add more features & pages at a later time. Part of our consultation process is to learn about your goals and priorities. Your project then can be done all at once or in phases.

  • How does "phasing out" my project work?

In some cases, you may want to create your project in phases for resource or budgeting reasons. If so, the project is broken into complete stages. At the end of every phase your website will be completely functioning with the features included in that phase. This assures you that if future phases are cancelled, your overall site does not appear incomplete or broken.

  • I read that WordPress has security issues, is that true?

All technology can be vulnerable if not properly managed and secured, and because WordPress is widely used, it is a target at times. While there are no guarantees in technology, we are very selective in our tech stack and thoroughly research the partner & tools we use, from the WordPress themes & plugins to the hosting server. We believe in keeping 3rd party tools to a minimum for both security & performance, and sites that are hosted & managed by Fivepenny are monitored for potential risks.

  • I can't afford to pay for every little content change, how can my assistant make website edits?

This is a common frustration with nonprofits, which often leaves websites untouched after publication becoming stale. For this reason, Fivepenny offers basic WordPress training after a website build is complete. We can teach you the essentials to control the basic day-to-day content changes to your website. And with a support retainer in place, you can trust that help is only a phone call away when it's truly needed.

  • Do I own my website?

Of course, it's your website that you have paid for. This is a benefit of developing with WordPress. They are easily portable with a variety of hosting options available if you choose to move it elsewhere in the future. Depending on your project, there may be Pro licensing tools used in the WordPress website build, but that will be clarified in the scope of work before your website is built.

  • Does my website have to hosted with Fivepenny?

While we prefer hosting websites to ensure access and security, we will edit or redesign a website if it is hosted elsewhere, as long as the host has the proper resources needed for your project. We provide secured WordPress hosting but we understand that sometimes, especially with nonprofits, you may already have resources that do not need to be replaced. This conversation will always be a part of the initial consultation and scope.
